Situated by the Maitai Motor camp by the bridge to Groom Road (forest track). Good recreation values, mainly walking. Safe swimming holes 50km upstream, and wetland restoration nearby. Occasional Cyanobacteria blooms in shallow riffle areas; more of a concern for dogs entering the river.

Maitai Bay is a sheltered beach on the outer Karikari Peninsula of Doubtless Bay.

The water quality at this site is monitored during the summer months. A safe swimming beach, note there are no patrols during summer.  Great surf beach, recognised nationally significant surf break. Good snorkeling in the rock pools at low tide. Makorori Beach is 10km from Gisborne.
