Taupō Stream

Taupō Stream catchment is located near Plimmerton and includes the Taupō Swamp (Ara Harakeke) which is a vital ecological filter for water and sediment before it reaches outer Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour (south end of Plimmerton). Taupō swamp is a lowland freshwater swamp, and this unique ecosystem and its tributaries are crucial for spawning native fish like longfin eels, banded kōkopu, and giant kōkopu.

Water quality in the Taupō Stream catchment is influenced by a combination of natural wetland filtration and anthropogenic pressures. While the swamp plays a key role in trapping sediment and maintaining water clarity, the catchment is subject to rural runoff, stormwater discharges, and potential nutrient loading from surrounding land use.

Greater Wellington Regional Council carries out environmental monitoring at one site, in the lower reaches of the stream.
