Korokoro Stream

The Korokoro Stream catchment is located to the west of Lower Hutt and drains towards Wellington Harbour, under SH2 and through a small estuary. The catchment encompasses parts of Belmont Regional Park and public access is available via tracks such as the Korokoro Stream Track and the Cornish Street entrance.

Water quality in the catchment is generally good in the upper forested areas but declines in urbanised sections due to stormwater runoff and stream modification. Korokoro Stream is also recognised for its high native fish values and biodiversity. The name Korokoro is one of the Māori names for lamprey, a threatened – nationally vulnerable species of fish.

Greater Wellington Regional Council carries out environmental monitoring at one site in the lower reaches of the stream, before it drains into Korokoro Estuary and into Wellington Harbour.
