Kaiwharawhara Stream

The Kaiwharawhara Stream flows through the western suburbs of the Wellington Region and down Ngaio Gorge before discharging into Wellington Harbour. The stream has high native fish values and provides a habitat for short jaw kōkopu, banded kōkopu, kōaro and giant kōkopu.

Greater Wellington Regional Council monitor the environmental health at one location in the lower reaches of the Kaiwharawhara Stream. Recreational water quality monitoring is not carried out in the stream.

The catchment area is heavily urbanised so the main pressures affecting the water quality of the Kaiwharawhara Stream are stormwater and, on occasion, sewage contamination resulting from infrastructure problems. There are also several old landfills in the catchment area.
