This site has temporarily been determined as unsuitable for swimming, and we recommend people do not swim at this site.Yesterday, testing was undertaken at the Porirua Wastewater Treatment Plant to check the back-up generator for the UV disinfecting system. During this period there was some discharge of partially treated wastewater.
Sampling is being undertaken and signage opened at the impacted areas. Please refrain from swimming and other recreational activities until 4pm Thursday 23 March to ensure water quality is good again.
Reminder
Heavy rain flushes contaminants from urban and rural land into waterways and we advise you not to swim for 2 – 3 days after heavy or prolonged rain – even at sites that generally have good water quality. Check that the water is clean and clear before taking a dip.

Be aware of other potential risks such as rips, strong currents, sudden drop offs, or underwater objects before jumping in. LAWA recommends that you avoid swimming for 2 - 3 days after heavy rainfall and follow the advice of any warning signs in place.

This flat sandy beach located to the west of Porirua City. It is a very popular beach for swimming, snorkelling, windsurfing, fishing, walking and picnicking. Sheltered by Mana Island the beach slopes gently into the ocean allowing swimmers to get a good distance into the water. While usually sheltered from swells it can be dangerous for inexperienced beach users in rougher conditions with strong rips and swells. Further up the beach surf lifeguards patrol during the summer months. This site popular with families due to its proximity to Arnold Park which contains a playground, car park, toilets and changing facilities. This site is monitored as a part of Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Recreational Water Quality Monitoring Programme, which is specifically designed to inform the public about the suitability of various sites across the region for swimming and other recreational activities.
