Central Upper Hutt

Central Upper Hutt covers the central business area and surrounding residential areas and is located within the wider Upper Hutt Valley airshed. This area is sheltered by hills and ranges on the eastern and western sides.

 

Air quality is measured at one site within the Savage Park reserve, in a residential area north west of the central business district. The air quality indicators measured are PM10, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide.

Central Upper Hutt generally has good air quality. In winter the main sources of air pollution are from home heating using wood or coal. PM10 concentrations peak during winter evenings when home fires are used and the weather is cold and calm and the sky is clear.

Nitrogen dioxide levels also increase during the winter months as there is less wind to blow away traffic emissions.
