The Hātea River flows through the city of Whangārei. Much of the saltmarsh and mangrove habitat that would have flanked the river has been drained and reclaimed for urban and industrial land use and the shoreline has been significantly modified. The channel is flanked by sheltered mud flats and fringing mangrove stands.
