The Uawa covers a catchment area 536km2 near Tolaga Bay north of Gisborne. Land use includes extensive sheep and cattle farming with significant areas that have recently changed (since the 1980’s) to more exotic forestry in a response to the level of erosion in the catchment.

The water quality at this site is monitored during the summer months. A safe swimming beach, note there are no patrols during summer. Great surf beach, recognised nationally significant surf break. Good snorkeling in the rock pools at low tide. Makorori Beach is 10km from Gisborne.
