Waikato River at Ohaaki Br
This site is only monitored for recreation every second year. Data from the past three monitored bathing seasons shows that the Overall Recreation Risk here is Very Low.
The water samples are collected from the footpath on the bridge on Ohaaki road. The riverbed consists of pumice sand and gravels. The river is wide with good water clarity. The riparian zone is fenced off so is quite weedy but with willows and the odd pine tree.
This site is below Lake Taupo and the hydro dam Lake Aratiatia. The soils upstream of this point are generally well draining pumice soils.
Landuse upstream of the monitoring site will affect the water quality. High flow events can also elevate the sediment and bacteria levels, which may lead to poor water quality and clarity.
