Oraka Stm at Lake Rd

The water quality site located on the Oraka Stream is accessed via State Highway 27 and Lake Road. The sampling point is a short distance downstream of the Lake Road bridge and is accessed via a small walking track. The stream is spring-fed and the headwaters are located in the high elevation Kaimai-Mamaku Forest before descending through farm land and passing through the townships of Putaruru and Tirau before entering the Waihou River east of the township Matamata.

The water quality site located on the Oraka Stream is accessed via State Highway 27 and Lake Road. The stream is spring-fed and the headwaters are located in the high elevation Kaimai-Mamaku Forest before descending through farm land and passing through the townships of Putaruru and Tirau before entering the Waihou River east of the township Matamata. The substrate is primarily boulders, rock and gravel throughout the upper reaches of the stream with exceptional water clarity before becoming turbid in the lower reaches as a result excessive sedimentation and nutrification. The riparian vegetation is exclusively dense native forest throughout the upper reaches of the stream before becoming sparse and predominantly exotic throughout the lower reaches as it enters the Waihou River.

Ecological communities are slightly impacted by minor DRP elevation above natural reference conditions. If other conditions also favour eutrophication, sensitive ecosystems may experience additional algal and plant growth, loss of sensitive macroinvertebrate taxa, and higher respiration and decay rates.
C
Ecological communities are impacted by moderate DRP elevation above natural reference conditions. If other conditions also favour eutrophication, DRP enrichment may cause increased algal and plant growth, loss of sensitive macroinvertebrate and fish taxa, and high rates of respiration and decay.
D
Ecological communities impacted by substantial DRP elevation above natural reference conditions. In combination with other conditions favouring eutrophication, DRP enrichment drives excessive primary production and significant changes in macroinvertebrate and fish communities, as taxa sensitive to hypoxia are lost.
