Marokopa River

The Marokopa River source is near the Waitomo Caves in the ranges
north of Te Anga Road, and flows in a westerly direction to enter the Tasman Sea near the town of Marokopa. The main stem measures 40.5km in length, with about 533km of tributaries. The catchment area is approximately 364 square kilometres. The catchment consists mostly of moderately steep to strongly rolling topography, and the river passes through a mixture of pasture and indigenous forest.

The dominant underlying geology is tephra and greywacke, with some mudstone. The sampling site is located in the middle reaches of the river below the Marokopa Falls. The Marokopa River is well known for the picturesque Marokopa Falls near Te Anga, which drop 30m. The river is joined by the Tawarau River below the falls.
