Waikato Regional Council

The Waikato region covers a land area of about 25,000 sq km. It includes several volcanic areas, including the Taupo area where a massive eruption about 23,000 years ago blasted a hole in the centre of the North Island, forming Lake Taupo. It also includes areas of sedimentary rocks, mostly mudstone, sandstone and limestone, with some areas containing coal.
