Takaka River

Occupying the southern part of Golden Bay, the Takaka catchment includes the Anatoki and Waingaro rivers which feed into the Takaka River. The Takaka River is 70 km long and starts on the north side of the Arthur Ranges in Kahurangi National Park. It flows into Golden Bay just north of the Takaka township.

Significantly, the Takaka catchment is home to Te Waikoropupu Springs, the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand. The springs are a popular tourist attraction and notable for containing some of the clearest water ever measured.

The maximum consented daily water take from the Takaka catchment is 1,073 cubic metres.
