The Tākaka River starts on the north side of the Arthur Ranges in Kahurangi National Park. It flows into Golden Bay just north of the Tākaka township.
Significantly, the Tākaka catchment is home to Te Waikoropupū Springs, the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand. The springs are a taonga (treasure) to local iwi and are notable for containing some of the clearest water in the Southern Hemisphere.
