Groundwater Zone: Marine Terraces North

The marine terraces comprise a series of wave-cut platforms and occur in coastal areas to the north and south of the Taranaki volcanic ring plain.

The terraces have been cut into the underlying Tertiary sedimentary formations and are covered with flat-lying deposits of sand, siltstone, conglomerate, peat and coal (cover beds) that are approximately 35 m thick. Numerous shallow wells and bores draw from unconfined aquifers in the cover beds with yields in the range 0.3-2.6 l/s. No confined aquifers occur in the marine terraces.

There are numerous permitted takes (less than 50 cubic metres per day) occurring across the marine terraces, providing water for stock and general farm use as well as domestic supply. The generally low yields from the aquifer mean that it cannot sustain high water demand activities such as pasture irrigation. As such, there are only four consented groundwater takes from the marine terraces which exceed 50 cubic metres per day in volume.

Accurately estimating the total amount of water available in a groundwater management zone is not currently possible. Regional Councils are working with the Ministry for the Environment on the best way to calculate this figure. We will include these figures on LAWA when they become available.
