The Whenuakura catchment lies in the eastern hill country of southern Taranaki. It has been largely developed for agriculture, with areas of production forestry and native forest. Many of the tributary headwaters are located in the eastern hill country, where natural vegetation provides some level of streambank protection, however the extent of this natural protection has not been quantified.
Efforts to enhance water quality include the implementation of riparian management plans, fencing of waterways, and planting initiatives led by Taranaki Regional Council and supported by landowners.
The catchment holds special value for Ngā Rauru Kītahi and Ngāti Ruanui iwi.
