Waimōku Stream at Ōākura Beach

The Waimōku Stream originates in Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki (the national park) in the Kaitake Ranges, before flowing through approximately four kilometres of agricultural land and through the coastal Ōākura township to the coast. This lower reach site is located in Ōākura township, about 100 metres upstream from the sea.

Macroinvertebrates have been monitored at this site since 1999. Taranaki Regional Council uses a modified macroinvertebrate taxa list tailored to reflect ecological conditions specific to Taranaki. While this influences the metrics reported by the Council, the data shown on LAWA is based on national scoring methods, which may differ slightly from the Council's internal reporting.
