Urenui River

This hill country river is typically discoloured by sediment at low tide with improved water quality at high tide. The estuary is extensively used by visitors to the Urenui Beach settlement.

For all sites, the Council advises :

Avoid for three days after heavy rain, if the river is high, or if you cannot see the bottom clearly.

This very popular weekend and holiday site is used for swimming, boating, fishing, and picnicking.

Summer recreational bathing surveys for 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 showed that 100% [KB1] of samples met the marine microbiological water quality guidelines prepared by the Ministry of Environment in conjunction with the Ministry of Health (MfE, 2003) and did not exceed the ‘Action’ level (>280 enterococci/100mls).

The State of the Environment technical report showing the freshwater recreational monitoring results for 2016-2017 is available at www.trc.govt.nz/environmental-monitoring-technical-reports/.
