The Urenui River is a hill country river in northern Taranaki. It is typically discoloured by sediment at low tide, with improved water quality observed at high tide. The estuary is extensively used by visitors to the Urenui Beach campground and surrounding baches.
A rāhui has been placed on the awa by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Mutunga due to ongoing contamination issues linked to aging and faulty septic tanks. In line with public health advice, the rāhui encourages safe and respectful use of the river, including avoiding swimming after heavy rain, refraining from gathering kai mātaitai, and staying off the mudflats below the township.
