The Tongapōrutu River is a northern Taranaki river that flows through a predominantly rural catchment before reaching the coast at Tongapōrutu. The estuary supports native fish breeding areas and diverse intertidal habitats. The catchment is mostly covered in native forest and sheep and beef farmland, with no industrial discharges. The area is culturally important to Ngāti Tama, with several pā sites located along the riverbanks.
