The Ōākuramatapū River drains a catchment with a high proportion of native bush and a smaller area of agricultural land. It originates in the Pouākai Range and is fed by sidestreams from the Kaitake Range. The river flows along the northern side of the Ōākura township and past the historic Ōākura Pā near its mouth, before discharging into the sea.
