Kopuawhakapata

The Kopuawhakapata Stream is an urban stream that has the Gisborne city suburb of Kaiti as its catchment. It discharges into the inner harbour basin after receiving stormwater from residential areas and part of the Eastland Port.

A section of the Kopuawhakapata Stream has been piped and the discharge into the Harbour basin passes under the Tatapouri Fishing Club building through pipes that start on the inland side of Hirini Street.

Water quality is often poor and shows the influence of recent subdivisions (affecting sediment) and more recently the effects from the use of the upper log yard at Eastland Port. Bacterial counts are often unacceptable for recreational contact. Causes of the high faecal coliform levels are not fully understood despite investigations.
