Hurunui River at SH1 Bridge

The Hurunui River is a large braided  river in North Canterbury.  Water quality are monitored at SH1 by NIWA and by Environment Canterbury during summer as part of their recreational water quality programme.  Environment Canterbury also monitors the macroinvertebrate information collected at this site.

The site is only accessible by a rough gravel track off a rest stop north of the SH1 bridge. It is situated on a gravel flat in the river bed surrounded by high riverbanks on the true right hand side.

During the summer months, potentially toxic cyanobacteria mats may pose a public health risk at this site. For up to date warnings visit http://ecan.govt.nz/services/online-services/monitoring/swimming-water-quality/Pages/river-warnings.aspx

Live Data
Automatic 'live data' sampling

Some sites have telemetry monitoring systems in place that can provide up to the minute data. At this site the following live data measurements are available. Click on the data type for more information.

  • Flow

    • Last 7 days
    • Last 30 days

What is this graph showing me?

The live flow estimate for this site.

Live data has not been checked for accuracy before displaying. To give you an idea about how much water that is, 0.7 cumecs (m3/sec) would fill an Olympic swimming pool in an hour. A flow of 42 cumecs (m3/sec) would fill the same pool in a minute.
