St Albans Packe St

This St Albans site was operational from mid 1988 to 2002. During this time PM10 concentrations regularly exceeded the daily guideline, and carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide exceeded some of their guidelines at times.  Benzene exceeded the annual guideline.

This St Albans site was established in mid-1988 by the Ministry of Health as part of a global air quality monitoring programme (GEMS). Control was transferred to the Ministry for the Environment in 1999, and the site was disestablished in 2002, when the monitoring equipment was moved to Burnside. From 1999 to 2002 the site ran in parallel with a second St Albans site at Coles Place, and the combination of data can be used to assess long term PM10 trends back to 1988 and gas trends back to 1994. Benzene was  monitored during five years (1996, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2004). Annual average concentrations reduced over this time, from above guideline to around two thirds of the guideline in 2004.

This dashboard shows the latest results for air quality indicators collected by regional councils and unitary authorities.  Indicators are shown against the National Environmental Standards for Air Quality (NES-AQ).  Where no national standards exist for the air quality measurements shown, the data are compared against other guidelines (e.g. World Health Organization (WHO) 2021 guidelines, Ambient Air Quality Guidelines (AAQG)).
