This site was originally established and monitored by NIWA, and is one of the original National River Water Quality Network (NRWQN) sites dating back to 1989.  The site is located approximately 60m upstream of the Bertrand Road Bridge.

Waitara West Beach is a popular surfing and windsurfing spot west of the Waitara River mouth. The beach is accessed from the walkway and car parks beside the beach.

Waitawhiriwhiri Stream water quality site at Edgecumbe Street. The water sample is taken from the culvert outlet under Victoria Street from this turbid and iron stained stream. The vegetation upstream is a mixture of native and introduced trees, parkland and urban.

Waitekauri River water quality site at U/S Ohinemuri Confluence. The substrate at this site is cobbly and the river is lined with native scrub and  introduced trees such as willows, poplars and pines.

The Waitetuna River at Te Uku-Waingaro Rd is a water quality site. The river is hard bottomed with the substrate consisting of gravel at the monitoring site. There is good riparian cover in the vicinity of the monitoring site.

Waitoa River water quality and ecology at Landsdowne Road Bridge. There is also a flow recorder site just 600m downstream of this site. The substrate consists of sand and one side of this narrow incised river is fenced off at this location with oak, poplar and willows present along the banks.

The Waitohi River is hill-fed river in North Canterbury and a tributary of the Hurunui River.  Water quality and macroinvertebrates are collected from this site which is accessed via a track off the main highway just before the Hurunui hotel.
