The Opihi River at Waipopo Huts is a hill-fed river near the coast in South Canterbury

Located in the middle of a small pastoral farming catchment draining into the Pourakino River. the sampling area is a small channelised stream with a gravel and fine sediment bed. Water quality data is collected here monthly as part of Environment Southland's State of the Environment monitoring.

The water quality site on the Opuatia Stream is accessed via Ponganui Road. This site is open with a small amount of riparian cover provided by sparse native tree remnants. The stream substrate consists largely of gravel.
