The Opaoa River was known as the Opawa River until its name was officially changed in 2014.  The Opaoa  includes the Omaka and Taylor Rivers as major tributaries, as well as the rivers flowing through the  Benmorven, Brancott and Omaka aquifers.

The Oparau River at Langdon Rd is a water quality, flow and ecology site. The river is hard-bottomed with the substrate consisting of cobbles/gravel at the monitoring site. The river banks have some riparian cover in the vicinity of the monitoring site.
