Temperature inversion

Typically temperature decreases with height above ground level.  A temperature inversion occurs when a layer of warm air sits over a layer of cooler air.  Because cool air is heavier than warm air, it often remains trapped close to the ground.  Air pollution that gets trapped beneath the inversion layer can build up, causing air pollution concentrations to increase.
