A colourless gas with a pungent smell, produced from human activities (eg, industry and shipping) and natural processes (geothermal and volcanic). Health effects include respiratory problems, such as bronchitis, chronic lung disease and worsening of the symptoms of asthma. Concentrations are reported in micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m3) of air.
