Nelson College for Girls year 11 Geography assess recreation and biodiversity values in the Maitai River

Nelson College for Girls year 11 Geography students have been out braving the cool Maitai river at three sites to assess the landscape, land use and water quality, as part of a class assessment.

The assessment, led by Jennifer Thomas, Head of Department Geography, provides an opportunity for students to learn about the Maitai, with respect to our Taonga, and how the water quality is influenced by natural processes and human activities.

The students learn how to evaluate the diversity of stream life based on the Wai Care - Waimaori Stream Care assessment and water quality assisted by Council monitoring staff. Reports on the assessment are due for completion by the end of term and will be displayed in the Elma Turner Library.
