Wastewater Treatment Plant overflow in Titahi Bay, Porirua

Due to the recent heavy rain the Porirua wastewater treatment plant has overflowed, resulting in partially treated wastewater entering Titahi Bay.

Wellington Water crews are currently working to resolve the issue, warning signs have been erected on site, and sampling is being undertaken.

We advise no swimming or other recreational activities, including the collection of kai moana, for at least 48 hours.

Note that as a general rule of thumb we advise no swimming for 2 days after heavy rain, even if a site generally has good water quality. This is because rain washes contaminants into the water and it can take up to 2 days to settle.
