Shellfish contamination near Pāuatahanui Inlet

As a result of rain, some wastewater discharged into the water near Pāuatahanui Inlet at Paremata Bridge on Friday 16th January 2026.

The wastewater discharged for a short period of time, and there is no increased health risk for swimming or other contact recreation in the area from the discharge.
However, shellfish can remain contaminated with viruses for weeks following a wastewater discharge.

Therefore, it is recommended that people do NOT collect or eat any shellfish from this area for the next 4 weeks, until Saturday 14th February 2026.
As always, we recommend people avoid any contact recreation in water ways when there has been significant rainfall in the previous 48 hours.
