Warning to stay out of all waterways for at least 48hrs after the rain has stopped

Wellington is currently experiencing severe weather conditions, with a RED wind warning in place and heavy rainfall across the entire region. In particular, Wellington and coastal areas of the Wairarapa are bracing for severe gale southerly and south-westerly winds - gusting up to 130 kilometers per hour. This can make conditions on the water very dangerous.

The heavy rainfall is also causing infrastructure overload and wastewater overflows in several areas including Porirua and the Wellington Harbour, this along with the heavy rain washing contaminants into waterways, means water quality is likely be severely impacted and not safe for recreational activities.

Greater Wellington strongly recommends staying out of all waterways across the region for at least 48hrs after the storm passes.
