Toxic Algae: Caution Advised for Waikanae River at Old SH1

There is currently an amber alert toxic algae warning in place at Waikanae River at old State Highway 1 due to moderate levels of toxic algae.

We recommend you exercise caution when swimming, especially if you have young children that may put things in their mouth.

Keep dogs on leads and away from the river’s edge. Most importantly do not let them scavenge anything from the riverbanks.

Toxic algae represents a very real risk to human and animal health. If you have been in contact with toxic algae and are feeling unwell see your doctor or ring Healthline 0800 611 116. If you think your dog has swallowed toxic algae, take it to the nearest vet IMMEDIATELY.

Remember the best way to keep you, your whanau and your doggies safe is to know what it looks like so you can avoid it.
