Masterton East (Herbert Street)

The Masterton East air quality site was located in grounds of Chanel College on Herbert Street. The site was established in 2013 to complement the long term monitoring site at Masterton West, which has operated since late 2002. The site was decommissioned at the beginning of 2023. The air quality indicators measured at this site were PM10 and PM2.5.

This site measured the impact of home heating fires on air quality. PM10 measurements from this site were used to report whether air quality met the National Environmental Standard.  This Standard requires Masterton to have no more than three days per year where PM10 levels are above 50 µg/m3 from September 2016 and no more than one day per year from 2020.

The Masterton East site typically measured higher winter concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 than the Masterton West site. On cold nights when winds are low and skies are clear, air pollution tends to build up near the Masterton East site due to the way air flows along the downslope contour of the river plain.
