Waikato River at Lake Karāpiro Boat Ramp

This site is at the Horahora domain boat ramp where the lake is surrounded by a grassy verge with a few sparse willows, oaks, eucalyptus and cabbage trees. The lake is used extensively over summer for water sports such as water-skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, rowing and swimming.

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms can be a concern at this site. If the water is bright green like pea soup, stay out. Extra care should be taken with toddlers and dogs as they like to put things into their mouths and even a small amount, the size of a 50-cent piece, can be enough to cause serious harm if consumed. Symptoms may include skin rashes, asthma attacks, rapid onset of nausea and diarrhoea. If you become sick after swimming, contact your health professional. Blooms will naturally dissipate in time.

Please use your own judgement before entering the water. Because the quality of the water is influenced by several different factors, it can change quickly. We advise against swimming if at least one of the following applies:
  • It has rained in the past two days.
  • The water is murky, and you are unable to see your feet while in the water.
  • The water has an unpleasant smell.

Lake Karapiro is downstream of Lake Taupo and the other 7 hydro dams of Aratiatia, Ohakuri, Atiamuri, Whakamaru, Maraetai, Waipapa and Arapuni higher up on the Waikato River.
