Waikato River at Huka Falls
This site is only monitored for recreation every second year. Data from the past three monitored bathing seasons shows that the Overall Recreation Risk here is Very Low.
The sample is collected from the Huka falls bridge. The water is clear and fast flowing at this point and a bucket is used to collect the sample. The river is lined with native shrubs and willows.
This site is 6.7 km downstream of Lake Taupo and upstream of the 8 hydro dams of Aratiatia, Ohakuri, Atiamuri, Whakamaru,Maraetai Waipapa, Arapuni and Karapiro lower on the Waikato River. This site is a major tourist attraction in the region.
Landuse upstream of the monitoring site will affect the water quality. High flow events can also elevate the sediment and bacteria levels, which may lead to poor water quality and clarity.
