Waikato region

The Waikato region has 1200km of diverse coastline, ranging from the white sands of the eastern Coromandel to the black sands of the rugged west coast from Port Waikato to Mokau. Our coastal water quality monitoring for recreation was restarted in 2016, so we don’t have enough data at this stage to meet the criteria for an overall recreational risk grade. We will meet these criteria in 2019 and then the recreational risk will be assessed and reported.

A number of harbours are found on both the west coast and the Coromandel. Other significant coastal features include the internationally significant Firth of Thames and Te Whanganui-A-Hei (Cathedral Cove) Marine Reserve.

Waikato Regional monitored bacteria levels at 25 coastal swimming beaches from 1991 to 2009. Water quality for swimming was usually at least satisfactory, and often excellent.

Given this, in 2009, the council discontinued monitoring coastal water quality for contact recreation and prioritised other areas.

The monitoring programme was reinstated at nine popular beaches in November 2016.
