PM10 exceedances occur frequently during winter in Tokoroa. The Tokoroa airshed is currently classified as polluted under the National Environmental Standards. From 1 September 2016 Tokoroa must have no more than three PM10 exceedance per 12 month period and from 1 September 2020 must have no more than one exceedance per 12 month period. The main source of poor air quality during winter is home heating using wood.
