Surface Water Zone: Motueka/Riwaka Plains Surface Water Zone

The Motueka/Riwaka Plains Management area covers the alluvial floodplains of the Motueka and Riwaka Rivers.The dominant land use in this area is mainly horticulture.

Water abstraction is principally from groundwater, with ample water in the central region of the Management Area. Low river flows can create abstraction pressure in the Riwaka river. Saltwater intrusion from localised pumping is a risk in the southern part of the plains where the gravels thin out.

Resource Consent information for this zone is current to the 2022/23 season.

    The allocation rate is for November to April inclusive for irrigation uses. Other uses are for all year. Additional permits outside the irrigation season can be granted (ie water harvesting) and are outside the limit specified in the plan. Therefore the allocation rate cannot be used to determine an annual total of water allocation.
