NPDC wastewater overflow - overflow at Waitara outfall (no swimming - 48 hours)

Please be informed that there has been an overflow from the NPDC wastewater system into the Tasman Sea via the Waitara outfall that has the potential to affect public health.  The discharge started Fri 4 July 2025 @ 0840 hours and ceased 310 minutes (5 hours and 10 minutes) later at 1330 hours.

The cause of the discharge was due to high and intense rainfall overwhelming our storage system at Waitara during an adverse weather event.

Sites affected include:

  • Waitara East Beach
  • Waitara West Beach

Warning signs advising against swimming have been erected at affected sites, and will be in place for 48 hours after the discharge has ceased.  It is recommended that there is no kai collection / food gathering until after 1/08/2025.
