NPDC wastewater overflow (no kai collection - 28 days)

Please be informed that there has been an overflow from the NPDC wastewater system into the Tasman Sea via the Eliot Street outfall that has the potential to affect public health.  The cause of the discharge was due to high and intense rainfall overwhelming the pump capacity at our Te Henui Pump Station during an adverse weather event.

The discharge started Friday 11 July 2025 @ 2119 hours and ceased 91 minutes (1 hour 31 minutes) later @ 2250 hours.

Sites affected include:

  • Huatoki Stream mouth
  • East End Beach
  • Tasman Sea below Bunnings
  • Tasman Sea at Kāwaroa Park

Warning signs advising against swimming have been erected at affected sites and will be in place for 48 hours after the discharge has ceased.  It is recommended that there is no kai collection / food gathering until after 9 August 2025.
