Recreation information has moved to the "Can I Swim Here?" section of LAWA
The Ōākuramatapū (Ōākura) River drains a mainly agricultural catchment. It is relatively short, rising in the nearby Kaitake range and the north-western area of Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki (the National Park). The river flows beside the small Oākura town and the historical Oākura Pa near the river mouth, before discharging into the sea.
Corbett Park is a popular beach reserve used for swimming, fishing, picnicking and whitebaiting (in season).
Please note that water quality can change depending on weather. Don't swim if the water is murky or smells unpleasant. Taranaki Regional Council advises not to swim within three days of heavy or prolonged rainfall, even at sites that usually have good water quality.
