Te Anau/Manapouri Surface Water Zone

The Te Anau - Manapouri surface water zone includes all streams and rivers flowing into Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri down to the Manapouri Lake Control (MLC). With much of this management zone covering Fiordland, there is a large amount of rainfall and consequently many river catchments. Only a small percentage of land in the Te Anau - Manapouri WRZ is in agricultural production. Farming occurs in the vicinity of Manapouri and Te Anau and near Te Anau Downs.

A number of rivers feed into Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri. One of the most well known and photographed tributaries is the Eglinton River. The Eglinton is crossed on the road to Milford Sound and supports a healthy rainbow and brown trout fishery. As there are low levels of development in the majority of the Te Anau/Manapouri surface water zone, Environment Southland has had less need to collect hydrological information for this area. Environment Southland undertakes periodic monitoring of other streams and waterways in the Te Anau-Manapouri zone. Due to hydropower generation in the Waiau catchment, this zone is deemed to be fully allocated.
