Surface Water Zone: Mid Mataura Surface Water Zone

The Mid Mataura surface water zone extends from the Parawa water level recorder site at the head of the Nokomai gorge down to the Gore township. The top end of this zone is hemmed in by the Slate Range, the Mataura Range and the southern extent of the Garvie Mountains. Downstream of the Nokomai gorge, much of the land is rolling to steeply rolling hill country.

There are several small to medium sized streams that contribute flow into the Mataura River in the Mid Mataura surface water zone. The Nokomai River flows into the Mataura as it flows through the gorge downstream of Parawa. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, large scale gold mining occurred in the Nokomai catchment. Several streams, the Nokomai in particular, were intercepted by water races that were used to divert water to the goldfield further down the catchment. The Waimea Stream contributes flow to the Mataura River near Mandeville. The Waimea has had significant amounts of straightening to improve drainage of the system and this has resulted in many kilometres of river length being lost. A number of significant spring-fed systems appear in this zone in the Riversdale-Mandeville areas. The largest and best known of these springs is the Meadow Burn. The well oxygenated water, low water temperatures and lack of flooding contribute to the Meadow Burn spring being an important brown trout spawning tributary. Within the Mid Mataura surface water zone, Environment Southland has several permanent water level and automatic rainfall recording sites. The Mid Mataura surface water zone has high levels of surface water allocation occurring from it. Much of the allocated surface water is for municipal and industrial purposes. Large areas of land are now being irrigated in the Riversdale area and many of these groundwater takes are resulting in stream depletion effects of surface waterways. The Mataura and Waikaia Rivers are protected by the Mataura River Conservation Order which acts to limit the amount of water able to be extracted and protect their outstanding fisheries.

Regional councils collect information about how much water is available and manage resource consents for those wishing to take water from rivers and streams. Use the buttons below to view information on: how much water is available, where it comes from and how its used.

The table above shows the average amount of rainfall the water management zone receives each year and how much of that flows out to sea. These are approximate figures only.

The Mataura River is subject to a National Water Conservation Order,  to protect the outstanding fisheries and angling amenity features of the catchment. Because of these features, the provisions of the Order restrict the granting of water permits to take water by requiring that flows not be reduced beyond a specified limit. Therefore the total run-off to sea and available allocation is subject to many variables.

The table above shows the amount of water that is available for use compared to the amount that has been consented. The ‘Total Consented’ and ‘Total Consented and Measured’ fields are based on percentages of the ‘Total available to Consent’ field. If this field is not populated no data will be displayed. Some consents require actual use to be monitored and this is presented as 'Total measured volume Used' where available.

The above table shows the proportion of water consented for irrigation, industrial, stock, town supply and other. It excludes hydro electricity. In this region/management zone {{hydroUsage.totalVolume}} m3/year is consented for hydro-electricity and makes up {{hydroUsage.percentageConsented}}% of the total water volume consented for this region/management zone
