Southland region

Southland has a beautiful coastline, which is 3,400km long, the longest of any region in New Zealand and one seventh of the New Zealand total. Southland’s coastal waters lie in the Tasman Sea, Foveaux Strait and the Pacific Ocean.

Environment Southland regularly monitors 13 marine bathing sites during summer (December to March). Samples are taken weekly during the season and tested for enterococci. Monitoring plans are prepared in collaboration with Public Health South, Southland District Council and Invercargill City Council and these are posted on Environment Southland's website for public access. Environment Southland uses two ways of assessing and advising the water quality risks to bathing. These are: by weekly monitoring of bathing water quality over summer; by incorporating long term water data and catchment use to give an Overall Recreation Grading.
