Surface Water Zone: Manuherikia Catchment

The Manuherikia Catchment water management zone covers an area of 302358 hectares. The Manuherikia catchment is heavily overallocated, largely as a result of the use of historic deemed permits to allocate water. The Otago Water Plan includes provisions to address this through the conversion of all deemed permits to resource consents by thier expiry in 2021. Falls Dam in the upper Manuherikia catchment is managed to augment flows in the Manuherikia to maintain a minimum flow at Ophir and to supply water for irrigation purposes.

 A number of irrigation races take water from the Manuherikia and its tributaries to supply irrigators within and outside of the Manuherikia catchment. There are several Creeks in the catchment that are sourced mainly from flood irrigation runoff, and will likely become ephemeral as more efficient techniques are phased in.  There is a minimum flow of 820 l/s at Ophir.

    Otago Regional Council is currently tranisitioning to a new water management plan and, consequently, cannot provide all the data requested by LAWA. More data will be added as it becomes available.
