Recreation information has moved to the "Can I Swim Here?" section of LAWA
This site was suitable for swimming 79% of the occasions sampled and unsuitable for swimming on 6% of the sampling occasions. Our investigations have tracked the source of bacteria as both ruminant (sheep/cows) and human.
Water is generally safe for recreational activities, however bacterial contamination can occur, commonly after rainfall, as stormwater and rural run-off may contain human or animal effluent.
We recommend you stay out of the water for 48 hours after heavy rain.
In the Manuherekia River, flows above 12 cumecs generally indicate substantial rainfall has fallen in the catchment.
