Surface Water Zone: East Coast Rivers

There are many small to medium-sized catchments on the upper East Coast of the South Island that flow directly to sea.  These include the Flaxbourne River, Waima (Ure) River, Boundary Stream, Station Creek, Blind River, Mirza Creek and Woodside Creek, as well as other smaller waterways.

This is a low rainfall area with only minor surface water resources despite some catchment areas of up to 150 km2.

Because they flow for a relatively short time of the year, these water resources are generally not well understood.  There has been some water harvesting on these streams but it is often unreliable due to low rainfall and high evapo-transpiration.

There are small storage irrigation schemes on a number of East Coast waterways but only the Flaxbourne and Waima Rivers have sufficient low flows for direct irrigation without storage.

Flaxbourne River

The Flaxbourne River is a small East Coast catchment that flows from about 1000 metres to its mouth at the sea just east of Ward. The Flaxbourne River is 25 km long and has a catchment area of about 155 km2. There is a main central valley with two major lowland catchments (Needles and Tachalls) on the southern side, and the Lake Elterwater catchment on the north.  With 600-800 mm of rain per year and local geology that does not retain much water, the flows in the lower reaches are quite low, particularly in summer.

Regional councils collect information about how much water is available and manage resource consents for those wishing to take water from rivers and streams. Use the buttons below to view information on: how much water is available, where it comes from and how its used.

The table above shows the average amount of rainfall the water management zone receives each year and how much of that flows out to sea. These are approximate figures only.

The table above shows the amount of water that is available for use compared to the amount that has been consented. The ‘Total Consented’ and ‘Total Consented and Measured’ fields are based on percentages of the ‘Total available to Consent’ field. If this field is not populated no data will be displayed. Some consents require actual use to be monitored and this is presented as 'Total measured volume Used' where available.

Values for water availability in this zone have not yet been provided. Marlborough District Council will be notifying a new Regional Plan later this year that will contain proposed allocation limits.  When this Plan is notified the proposed limits will be used to update the empty fields

The above table shows the proportion of water consented for irrigation, industrial, stock, town supply and other. It excludes hydro electricity. In this region/management zone {{hydroUsage.totalVolume}} m3/year is consented for hydro-electricity and makes up {{hydroUsage.percentageConsented}}% of the total water volume consented for this region/management zone

It excludes stock water as the taking of stock water in Marlborough is a permitted activity and a resource consent is not required or issued for this activity.

The town supply activity total includes council operated schemes in both urban and rural settings as well as private communal rural schemes.
