Manawatū-Whanganui region

Surface Water Zone: Rangitīkei

The Rangitīkei River is 253 km long and its catchment covers an area of 3,948 square km. Streams total 6,214 km. The Rangitīkei catchment has a number of tributaries including the Moawhango (97 km), Hautapu (83 km), Kawhatau (53 km) and Mangawharariki (33 km) Rivers.

The headwaters of the Rangitīkei are situated in the Kaimanawa Ranges, south-east of Lake Taupo. It flows south through the Central Plateau, past Taihape, Mangaweka, Hunterville, Marton and Bulls to the Tasman Sea at Tangimoana, 40 km south-east of Whanganui. The Rangitīkei flows through rural areas with sheep and beef farming accounting for about half its land use and dairy farming about 20%. In the Rangitīkei catchment the ‘National Water Conservation (Rangitīkei River) Order 1993’ is in place which affects the allowed abstraction in the Upper Rangitīkei (no abstraction) and the Middle Rangitīkei (allocation of only 5% of the natural flow). The existing hydro-electricity take by Genesis Energy’s Tongariro Power Development also impacts on water availability in the Moawhango River. This is reflected in Schedule B of the One Plan where the allocation limits for the Moawhango sub-zones are set at zero. Currently, Rangitīkei catchment sub-zones Rang_1a, Rang_2c, Rang_2d, Rang_2e and Rang_4c are fully allocated and sub-zone Rang_4d is over-allocated. At the ‘Whole Zone Cumulative’ and ‘Catchment Cumulative’ levels there is water available for further allocation.

Regional councils collect information about how much water is available and manage resource consents for those wishing to take water from rivers and streams. Use the buttons below to view information on: how much water is available, where it comes from and how its used.

The table above shows the average amount of rainfall the water management zone receives each year and how much of that flows out to sea. These are approximate figures only.

The table above shows the amount of water that is available for use compared to the amount that has been consented. The ‘Total Consented’ and ‘Total Consented and Measured’ fields are based on percentages of the ‘Total available to Consent’ field. If this field is not populated no data will be displayed. Some consents require actual use to be monitored and this is presented as 'Total measured volume Used' where available.

The above table shows the proportion of water consented for irrigation, industrial, stock, town supply and other. It excludes hydro electricity. In this region/management zone {{hydroUsage.totalVolume}} m3/year is consented for hydro-electricity and makes up {{hydroUsage.percentageConsented}}% of the total water volume consented for this region/management zone
