Surface Water Zone: Ākitio

The Ākitio catchment encompasses the Ākitio River, which flows for 35 kilometres in a south-easterly direction before entering the Pacific Ocean at Ākitio, and the Waihi Stream. Ākitio is a coastal community located in the Tararua District. 

The Ākitio River has been identified as a site of significance for aquatic life. There is still water available in the Lower Ākitio water management sub-zone and there is currently one abstraction for irrigation within the sub-zone and two for drinking water in the Waihi sub-zone which adds to the cumulative allocated volume in this sub-zone. The water allocation framework manages impacts of the allocation on water body values including consumptive uses by setting minimum flows and allocation limits for each sub-zone. The minimum flows for this sub-zone were set at 95% of the Mean Annual Low Flow Statistics at the Ākitio at Mouth Flow site. Allocation volumes are set at 20% of the Mean Annual Low Flow for this site and balance up the need for water with the amount of time users will be restricted due to minimum flows being reached.
